International Youth Day: Why is it celebrated?

Wishing you all a very happy INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY 2020!

It’s unfair to say that situations of crisis are unique to a sphere of life. As a matter of fact, every species, every lineage, every family in fact every person has a fair share of problems in their lives.

On this day, let’s come together and reopen the books that date back to 1990s, 1999 to be precise, when the General Assembly endorsed the recommendation made by the  World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth (Lisbon, 8-12 August 1998) that 12 August be declared International Youth Day.
This day has been reserved for this by UN, since then. Like many other worldwide festivities this day also has a special reason to be observed as an international celebration.

International days are occasions to educate the public on issues of concern, to mobilize political will and resources to address global problems, and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity. The existence of international days predates the establishment of the United Nations, but the UN has embraced them as a powerful advocacy tool. We also mark other UN observances.

International Youth Day gives an opportunity to celebrate and mainstream young peoples’ voices, actions and initiatives, as well as their meaningful, universal and equitable engagement. The commemoration will take the form of a podcast-style discussion that is hosted by youth for youth, together with independently organised commemorations around the world that recognise the importance of youth participation in political, economic and social life and processes.

Youth can be a positive force for development when provided with the knowledge and opportunities they need to thrive. Today, there are 1.2 billion young people aged 15 to 24 years, accounting for 16 per cent of the global population . By 2030—the target date for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that make up the 2030 Agenda—the number of youth is projected to have grown by 7 per cent, to nearly 1.3 billion

This day ignites strength in people, in non-governmental and governmental organisations as well as in the young to raise their voice against the cultural, moral and legal youth issues prevalent in our societies across the globe. It is not hidden that there is an unending reserved potential in the young and hence we must find the courage to work on the matters in question that are hampering their growth so as to direct their power, and in turn the power of the world, towards the good.

There are a number of youth issues which should be taken care of. WORLD ASSEMBLY OF YOUTH {WAY} specifies these under 21 different categories and find all of these the foremost ones to be resolved:

  1. Girls & Young Women: women have over the years been prone to social ills compared to their male counterparts
  2. HIV/AIDS: stop the pandemic at least by reducing its statistical figure
  3. Democracy: cultivate a culture of democratic participation
  4. Disability & Drugs: decrease number of increasing cases
  5. Education: crucial to develop creative thinking and necessary to work and bring a change in the society
  6. Unemployment: causes layoffs in economy
  7. Health: Healthy and happy adolescents are in a better place to give out and to be the pillars and strengths of their societies.
  8. Human Rights: Knowledge of substantive and legal rights should be given to them
  9. Population: the no. should not grow at such a faster rate
  10. Intergenerational Relationships: have substantial effects on the lives of the old and Young population
  11. Juvenile Delinquency: the escalating number of minors committing crimes should be reduced by either preventing or by sentencing punishment
  12. Poverty: is a worldwide predicament, no continent nor is any society immune to it so find a solution to this depriving problem.
  13. ICT: social and developmental inclusion of youth in the society
  14. Globalisation: transformations that range from cultural, historical, technological, and demographic changes require youth

International Youth Day

UN had a very crucial thought in the creation of this day as they wanted the youth of the day to come in front as leading archetypal of the world so as to gain experience for future and work as a good representative leading economy in a fair manner and working hard on resolving the issues which demand a better dealing. The above listed issues are the ones which should actually be taken care off properly so as to build a better future. The day is to spread awareness on these all problems which can be resolved by those who are the world’s future-THE YOUTH and so United Nations designated it as an awareness day.

Celebration of the IYD includes some concerts for spreading awareness through activities which attract people and workshops for giving the readers and listener a chance to be a part of this change, cultural events as to reach the maximum, and meetings for discussing the functioning of youth in all the matters of the polarised world.

   Happy International Youth Day...!

Every year UN assigns the day with a theme based on the aim of the day. And The theme for this year is – Youth Engagement for Global Action. The theme draws attention to the fact that involvement of young people at local, national and worldwide level can bring an unexpected change.

If youth and society goes hand in hand, their symbiotic relationship will tap the world into greatness!

Youth is a crucial part of world and can really make a great change as,

‘.. in the juvenile there is always a thought that what they desire is no less than what they deserve…
They are firm that if they work badly for something, it’s their birthright to have it.. ‘

This belief can move the world, and if channelised, for the good.
